The fruiting body is club-shaped, dirty yellow to ochre, with a stem slightly distinctive, lemon yellow, hairy and narrow.

the odour is faint, of soot.

The fertile surface is smooth.

It grows on the ground, in grassy areas or moors, on sandy ground.

The fruiting period takes place from July to December.
Dimensions: width of fruiting body approximately 0.5 cm (between 0.2 and 0.8 cm)
  total height approximately 5 cm (between 3 and 8 cm)

Distinctive features : club-shaped, simple (not branching) but trooping

Clavaria argillacea is still unreported so far in the forest of Rambouillet, and is infrequent, more generally speaking .
