The fruiting body is spindle-shaped (tapering towards both ends), mouse grey to smoke grey, yellowish at the base.

The fertile surface is smooth.

It grows on the ground, amongst moss, in woodlands.

The fruiting period takes place from July to December.
Dimensions: width of fruiting body approximately 0.5 cm (between 0.015 and 0.8 cm)
  total height approximately 7 cm (between 1.5 and 14 cm)

Distinctive features : simple (not branching), in dense tufts

Clavaria fumosa is still unreported so far in the forest of Rambouillet, and is infrequent, more generally speaking .
