The cap is cup-shaped then saddle-shaped, with a light grey to pale brown internal surface, the external being light grey to pale brown, with a well differentiated stem, smooth, concolorous to cap or lighter. The fertile surface is smooth. It grows on the ground, in broad-leaved and mixed woods, on clayey soils. The fruiting period takes place from June to December.
Helvella ephippium is still unreported so far in the forest of Rambouillet, and is quite rare, more generally speaking .
