The cap is convex, not depressed at the centre, lobed, with an inrolled margin, with sometimes a hole at the centre, orange to red-orange, with a stem often central and slender. The flesh is white, firm but brittle, turning reddish when exposed to air; its taste is mild then bitter; the odour is pleasant. The fertile surface is made of orange-yellow to salmon pink, non decurrent spines. The spore print is white.It grows on the ground, in coniferous woods, also sometimes with broad-leaved trees, on a rather calcareous, but also acid soil. The fruiting period takes place from September to December.
