The fruiting body is spherical or pear-shaped, covered with short (1 mm) blackish-brown spines, grey-brown to dark brown, with a short non-differentiated stem (not taller than the fertile head).

The fertile surface is internal: the spores are released as dust when mature. The spore print is olive-brown.

It grows on the ground, in coniferous woods, with spruce.

The fruiting period takes place from July to December.
Dimensions: width of fruiting body approximately 3.5 cm (between 2 and 5 cm)
  total height approximately 3.5 cm (between 2 and 6 cm)
