The fruiting body is spherical or pear-shaped, covered with short (1 mm) blackish-brown spines, grey-brown to dark brown, with a short non-differentiated stem (not taller than the fertile head). The fertile surface is internal: the spores are released as dust when mature. The spore print is olive-brown.It grows on the ground, in coniferous woods, with spruce. The fruiting period takes place from July to December.
