- Let's clear delicately the base of the stem from the soil, so as to detect the potential presence of a "volva", more specifically of volva remnants, or other items such as root-like mycelial cords. There is nothing, so let's record there was no volva.
We can now dig the mushroom out completely (without cutting it!). It's a good time to smell the mushroom (under the gills) while it's still fresh. We can note here a distinctive aromatic odour, but somewhat still difficult to place and associate to a known scent...
