The cap is honeycombed cap, egg-shaped or elongated, with vertical parallel primary ridges, the secondary ridges (inside) are forming square or rectangular pits, black-brown to black, with a well differentiated, short and grainy, ochraceous white stem. The fertile surface is smooth. It grows on the ground, in gardens, rich soils, rubble, enclosures, on a rather calcareous soil. The fruiting period takes place from April to June.
Distinctive features : egg-shaped cap with small vallecule (small free room on top of stem); cap with prominent and vertical parallel primary ridges, the secondary ridges (inside) are forming rectangular pits; in gardens, rubble, enclosures Morchella hortensis is still unreported so far in the forest of Rambouillet, and is very rare, more generally speaking .
