The cap is dark red-brown to blackish, conical to bell-shaped, without an umbo; its margin is striate if slightly damp. The cap surface is smooth, not viscid nor sticky.

The stem is very slender, cylindrical, entirely and clearly pruinose, dark brown and paler towards the top.

The flesh is clay brown to vinaceous brown, unchanging; its taste is mild; the odour is mushroomy; its texture is fibrous.

The gills are grey then black, with a white edge, adnate, crowded . The spore print is black. This species is saprophytic. It grows on the ground, in lawns, meadows, pastures, grassy areas on rich and damp soils.

The fruiting period takes place from July to November.
Dimensions: width of cap approximately 1.5 cm (between 0.5 and 2 cm)
  height of stem approximately 8 cm (between 5 and 10 cm)
  thickness of stem (at largest section) approximately 2 mm (between 1 and 3 mm)

Chemical tests : none.

Distinctive features : reddish brown cap, bell-shaped but without umbo; red-brown stem, powdered with white; black gills with a white edge; in damp grassy areas on rich soil;

Panaeolus rickenii is still unreported so far in the forest of Rambouillet, and is occasional, more generally speaking .
