The cap is cream-white to pallid ochre-buff, convex then expanded, eventually slightly depressed or wavy; its margin is smooth to wavy. The cap surface is smooth, silky and matt.

The stem is white, slightly reddening, stained with pale brown, without ring nor ring zone.

The flesh is white to whitish, unchanging; its taste is mild then slightly bitter; the odour is pleasant, of Philadelphus, orange flowers or honeysuckle, with a component of coal gas; its texture is fibrous.

The gills are white then cream, emarginate, crowded . The spore print is white. This species is mycorrhizal. It grows on the ground, in deciduous woods, on a rather acid soil, with oak, beech, hornbeam (but not with birch).

The fruiting period takes place from September to November.

Chemical tests : green reaction of flesh to sulfo-vanillin.

Distinctive features : Cream cap, then ochre-pale brown in the youth, not yellowing; whitish stem; strong odour of orange flowers or Philadelphus; mild to slightly bitter taste; with deciduous trees (but not birch)
